Nemanja Vidic plays down Ferguson punishment

Nemanja Vidic does not expect Sir Alex Ferguson's touchline ban to have any impact on Manchester United's attempts to rein in Chelsea at the top of the Premier League.

Ferguson will be banished to the stands for the upcoming fixtures against Everton and Portsmouth after the Football Association imposed the punishment following his controversial comments regarding the fitness of referee Alan Wiley.

But as United aim to reduce the five-point gap opened up by leaders Chelsea, Vidic is insistent that the ban will have little real effect on the team.

"In that aspect I don't think there will be a big difference. He [Ferguson] sees everything and he will still have contact with the second coach [Mike Phelan]," Vidic told Sky Sports News."We know what is waiting for us and what he expects of us - nothing changes. During the game you are focused and you don't look over to the bench.

"We have some big games coming up, especially after Chelsea moved five points ahead of us, and now the next three or four games are very important to us. I hope we show the character to win the games without him."

Ferguson was also fined £20,000 for his outburst in the wake of a 2-2 draw with Sunderland in October, while a further two-game ban will come into effect if he is found guilty of a similar offence before the end of the 2010-11 season.
