Marouane Fellaini: wins Man of the Match award at Preston

Marouane Fellaini scooped Manchester United's Man of the Match award in the Reds' 3-1 FA Cup fifth-round win over Preston North End, as voted by @ManUtd followers on Twitter.

The Belgian midfielder once again proved pivotal in turning around the team's fortunes away from home as he continually caused problems in Preston's penalty area, and his persistence paid off when he put the Reds in front in the tie after 72 minutes.

Louis van Gaal was proud of the training ground move that led to the goal. Antonio Valencia found space down the right flank to pull a cross back from the byline, and although Fellaini's downward header forced a parried save from Preston goalkeeper Thorsten Stuckmann, Marouane reacted quickly to jab the ball home from an acute angle.

Fellaini's strike came just seven minutes after Ander Herrera had drawn United level, after Scott Laird's deflected effort put the home side in front. Herrera was equally impressive for the Reds, and in fact finished top in a fan vote on Facebook to name United's star man.

But as Wayne Rooney wrapped up a 3-1 win from the penalty spot to send United marching on in the Cup - as Arsenal wait in the quarter-finals - it was Fellaini who took the official accolade with 55 per cent of votes, ahead of Angel Di Maria (25 per cent) and Valencia (20 per cent).
